NEW HAVEN - Becoming Donna was given its premiere screening at Film Fest New Haven on March 12, 2004 and will now become the centerpiece of the 17th Annual Connecticut Gay & Lesbian Film Festival June 9 in Hartford at Trinity’s Cinestudio.

Produced and directed by John D. Allen, founder of the New Haven Gay & Lesbian Community Center founder and the Rainbow Support Group, and New Haven’s Citizens Television Program Director Tim Dagradi, the 43 minute documentary illustrates the story of Paul, a 36-year-old male who experiences mild mental retardation and is pre-operational for becoming transsexual.

The National Lesbian and Gay Journalist Association, which Allen has been a member of since 1995, is hosting a reception in his honor and is included with the price of admission.

“We wanted to do this to recognize the accomplishment of one of our members,” said Doug Stewart, New England Chapter president of NLGJA and the Operations Manager for WTIC Fox 61 News in Hartford.

Since the film is uniquely Connecticut-based, the festival will be giving the film the star treatment.

“This is a Connecticut-based film that was created by Connecticut filmmakers about a Connecticut subject. We want to make this the centerpiece of this year’s festival,” said Dan Millett, CTGLFF Festival Director.

Becoming Donna will be screened on Wednesday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. with the reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. and as of press time, will be screened with a second film to be determined.

CTGLFF runs June 4 to 12 at Cinestudio, Trinity College, 300 Summit Street, Hartford. Tickets are $8 general admission and $6 for students and seniors. Call 860-586-1136 or www.ctglff.org.
